Headed to South Florida? Here Are 7 Amazing Things You Should Really Check Out
With a calendar full of events, there’s never a dull moment in South Florida, even during the winter months. You can be sure to have a great time whenever you’re headed to this fantastic location.
The only trouble is, there are so many activities, events, and festivals going on that you might have a hard time choosing how to spend your time. The last thing we want is to be so busy searching online for ‘South Florida events today’ that you miss out on something amazing!
To make sure you know where to be and when, here’s a selection of the best upcoming things to do in South Florida.
1. The Love Burn
The Love Burn is South Florida’s version of the Burning Man arts festival in Nevada. Running from January 25th to 27th, this year’s theme is ‘The Lost Island of Taboo,’ so expect lots of creative sculptures to match that concept.
Like the Burning Man festival, this event is based on key principles like self-expression and self-reliance. As such, all of the sculptures will be burnt down at the end of the weekend as part of a sensational display at Miami’s Virginia Key Beach Park.
In addition to sculptures, the event features great costumes, sun salutations, circus tents, live music, and performance art. This off-the-grid event has no official scheduled bands nor vendors, so no one knows what to expect until they arrive! Just make sure to book soon as the tickets are selling fast.
2. South Florida Folk Festival
Some months you can’t move for festivals in South Florida, and January is no exception. On January 26th and 27th, you can attend the South Florida Folk Festival – held at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park in Fort Lauderdale.
This year’s headliners are The Ronny Cox Trio, David Olney, The Caroline Aiken Band, and Tom Prasada-Rao. The event includes more than 40 acts on two stages over the whole weekend, including a host of Florida-based musicians.
Besides live music, the festival features a songwriting competition, workshops led by performers, a jam area, and food and craft vendors.
3. South Florida Fair
For more live music as well as a whole host of other activities and events, head down to the South Florida Fairgrounds in West Palm Beach.
The South Florida Fair starts on January 18th but runs right through until February 3rd, so visitors to the area have plenty of time to enjoy this event.
This year’s headliners are Frankie Ballard, The Outlaws, Charlie Aponte, Jordan Davis, Building 429, and Pat Travers Band. Plus, the fair boasts rides, livestock shows, exhibits, auctions, competitions, and lots of fun activities for kids. Expect plenty of tasty fair food, from cotton candy to corn dogs!
4. South Beach Wine & Food Festival
If you’re headed to South Beach at the end of February, there’s no need to look online for ‘events in south Florida this weekend.’ The only place to be between February 20th and 24th is the South Beach Wine & Food Festival aka SOBEWFF.
With more than 100 events spread out over Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties, this year’s SOBEWFF is set to be an unmissable event. Expect plenty of culinary demos, tasting events, parties, and family fun!
In fact, SOBEWFF is such a hot event that it would be a great place for a first date if you’re looking to experience the best of South Florida’s food and drink scene.
5. Polynesian Cultural Festival
Along with several Greek and Asian festivals in South Florida in the coming months, the Polynesian Cultural Festival is taking place on February 23rd and 24th.
The festival includes authentic island music, fire knife dancers, hula dancers, a ukulele exhibition, a tiki bar, and a kid’s corner for the little ones. Not to mention, there’s plenty of delicious Polynesian cuisine for you to try.
If you’re keen to show off your hula skills, you might just win the contest taking place as part of this event at Jaco Pastorius Park in Oakland Park.
6. Delray Beach Bacon & Bourbon Fest
What more do we need to say about a festival name like that?! As you might have guessed, this event celebrates all things bacon alongside the quintessential American liquor, bourbon. You might say it’s like going to flavor heaven.
Make sure you come hungry as you’ll have plenty of opportunities to pig out (pun intended!). The menu has been developed by chefs out on a mission to push the boundaries of bacon dishes, including bacon ice cream. And of course, there’s a wide selection of fine American bourbons to wash all that food down, as well as live music and seminars.
If this deliciousness sounds like you’d love, head to Old School Square Park in Delray Beach on March 22nd and 23rd.
7. Rock the Ocean Tortuga Music Festival
From April 12th to 14th this year, the Tortuga Music Festival transforms Fort Lauderdale Beach into an oceanfront stage filled with the best acts.
This year’s headliners are Jason Aldean, Kenny Chesney, Sheryl Crow, and Elle King as well as South Florida’s finest, Flo Rida himself. As if Fort Lauderdale doesn’t already have enough attractions to keep you entertained!
With its beautiful setting, the festival aims to highlight the importance of marine conservation and research.
